How it Works

Contacting Us

Clients contact us by email, telephone and, on occasion, by post. Projects in need of editing and proofreading may consist of documents from under 500 words to over 100,000 words in length. Projects can include reports, essays, dissertations, journal articles, books, press releases, brochures and booklets.

Clients are given a full explanation of the editing, proofreading and rewriting services provided.

Reviewing Projects

Microsoft documents (the most common)
Work can be sent as Word 2008, 2007, 2010 documents. Clients are informed that editing and proofreading is done in Track Changes, where text is added and modified in the editing process. On completion of the work, clients are sent three documents: a clean copy that is ready for print; a document containing Track Changes and a list of queries and suggestions if this is applicable.
PDF documents
For PDFs (portable document format) documents, we use PDF-XChange. We use the Wacom annotation tool in proofreading PDF files. This is quicker and easier for publishers and clients to follow any changes that have been made to such documents.
Web pages
Web pages are edited using the Snipping Tool, Evernote and pages can be converted to Microsoft Word documents or PDF files.
Hard copy
If clients want us to do editing in hard copy, we mark the edits by hand and post or email the corrections to them.
Timing

Short documents (under 1000 words), requiring a modest edit, may take only a few hours to complete; a more complex document may take several days, depending on its length and complexity.
Invoicing & Paying

Payment is discussed when clients first contact us before the work commences. Payment is based on the cost for every 1000 words (£17/1000 words, see Costs).

A 50% deposit must be paid (before work commences) on all projects that exceed 40 000 words in length.

In some instances, an hourly rate for editing and proofreading is employed. This applies for the proofreading of company brochures and booklets that may have a lot of artwork. For more details of such projects, see Costs.

Invoices are sent on the completion of a project or projects. The invoice states that payment has to be made within 7 days of the date of the invoice.

Payment is made by Visa Card, MasterCard, PayPal or cheque.
